The Emergence of Blue and Red

There has been a lot of talk in fashion and color forecasting circles that blue and red are heavily trending for 2023. This is clearly evident on the runways and is exemplified by iconic British brand Burberry in their 2023 Resort Collection. Drawing inspiration from classic British design they create looks that are contemporary and relevant, using only the highest quality fabrics and finishing.

The core blue color is a rich cobalt and the red is slightly "orangish" in hue. Both will work perfectly as accents in accessories, rugs and textiles to refresh and update modern interiors.

Making the Classics New

I have always been attracted to the merging of the historical and modern in design expression, especially when rooted in cultural heritage. As globalization continues to dominate our everyday lives, for many of us a sense of home and connection as to where we are from, becomes increasingly important. Being born and raised in London before moving to the USA this is a sentiment I am very familiar with.

I love this view of Waterloo bridge in London, with the historical landmark buildings on the Embankment in the foreground, blend seamlessly with the towering modern architecture behind. Notice the Gherkin building in the background peeping through on the far left. Designed by award winning architect Sir Norman Foster, it is one of the most famous buildings in London, admired for its streamlined design in faceted glass. It's conception in 2003 started the wave of modern construction that continues to this day.

Vintage weaves and prints have always been a source of design inspiration at the MVM custom design studio. Plaids and their iterations have long been associated with British textiles and have been around since the 1550's, originally emanating from Scotland. Here they are used as inspiration for the MVM Algorithm Collection. The hand knotted construction is crafted from fine wool that has been sheared down to have a very low pile, creating an antiqued surface texture that is enduring and timeless.

British Luxury

British luxury is synonymous with quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Below I attempt to highlight but a few of of the many designers and brands that juxtapose modernity with quintessential "Englishness", whose timeless ideas continue to inspire.

From the bespoke gentleman's tailors of London's Savile Row, to the iconic motor brands of Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Morgan and Triumph. From the wealth of influential British fashion designers, from Vivienne Westwood to Alexander McQueen who have been so instrumental in defining a design aesthetic that is so recognizably British.

Designer David Linley continues to delight with his highly crafted furniture pieces and eclectic interior design sensibility. When asked where his inspiration came from he responded, " Architecture, art , travel and the City of London all inspire me".

One cannot talk of great British design without paying homage to the late British architect Sir Richard Rogers (1933-2012) responsible for so many beautiful buildings worldwide. Probably his most famous being the Lloyds building in London. Renowned for its originality, modernity and functionality, it brought the great British banking establishment firmly into the 20th century.

A passion to deliver quality and personalized craftsmanship is a driving force behind MVM Custom. We use only the highest quality, ethically sourced yarns in wool, cashmere, mohair and pure silk.
