The passing of time is one of life’s certainties.

The world around us is affected in so many ways by the passing of time.
Through the seasons, through the years, through the centuries.
Through generations, capturing life experiences with collective memory.

Our unique personal perceptions and attraction to colors and styles evolves with the passing of time. Trends come and go, often influencing our design decisions either on a conscious or subconscious level. How many times have you thought you have come up with a new idea only to see something similar elsewhere !

I do however fundamentally believe that as individuals, the draw to certain colors remains constant during the course our lifetime and is often “tweaked” to stay current. I have done a little research and have found this is the case for most people.

For me as I look back, I realized that I have always been very strongly attracted to the same two distinct color families: shades of soft blue/ muted aqua and all tones of orange. The specific hues I am drawn to have changed with the passing of time; blues shifting from soft blue through bluish greys, to dusty duck egg. Oranges spanning from bright orange and coral through terracotta and shade of nude. Of course, from time-to-time, hot trend colors such as, soft yellow and pink have crept in as accents, they are temporary, and their life span is short-lived.

The core attraction stays surprisingly unwavering and constant. You will always find versions and representations of my preferred colors in my work but there is also a strong appreciation and respect that we are all different and that seasonal trend can be a major influence. Forever changing natural textures and patterns always inspire. They are they are not instantaneous. Without the passing of time they would not exist. They stand in high contrast to the fast-moving world we encounter daily, imbuing a sense of ease through familiarity:

The shades and shapes of eroded rock and stone,
The soft patina on aged metals,
The colors and patterns on the weathered exteriors of old buildings that capture so much more than just a visual reference – A snapshot in time with their own history and story.

For this same reason vintage textiles and fabric carry an energy and vibration from the passing of time, be it cultural or personal; heirlooms passed down through generations.
